About DR. Elton Harps
My story is very interesting. After I graduated from my high school Centennial High School in 1976, I enlisted in the military (US Coast Guard) and then retired in 1997 with 20 years of service. During these years, my main job was an Intelligence Officer that conducted international investigations that focus on both illegal human and narcotics trafficking of international waters. Currently, I continued my career in the government in law-enforcement as a Homeland Security Border Protection Officer. In this government position, it allowed me to continue my law enforcement investigations skills of which I joined a terrorist task force of agents (FBI,CIA, and others that focus on examining and denying travelers who attempted enter the US by (sea, land, trains, and air) of both US and foreign citizens. This government task force stopped over 300, 000 terrorist treats from entering the US to avoid another 911. Without doubt, this task force assisted capturing terrorist Osama bin Laden. During this time, I was permitted to use and learn many top-secret sophisticated government systems that allowed my efforts to be successfully to stop possible forthcoming terrorist from entering the United States.
Additionally, I continued my employment working other positions as a Reserve Probation Officer, CA. This position allowed to help underprivileged youth ages 5 to 21 that struggle with criminal activity, mental health, and excessive tardiness. I have a dedicated background to teach others in need regarding mental health and criminal psychology so I then became an instructor for Department of Social Services. This teaching position also allows me to teach staff a state requirement of 35 hours course that focus on how to assist adults and children with developmental disabilities who have prior criminal records and then the local courts approved for them to go to group home instead of mental institutions.
In addition, I continued to teach as a Homeland Security Professor for many local colleges. Many of the courses are related to mental health courses as it relates to veterans that experience Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I worked as a Long Beach Police Officer for 3 years. I was able to complete my degrees, PHD Criminal Justice at Capella University, MA, Management, University of Redlands and BA, Organizational Management, Vanguard University and two AA degree Criminal Justice and Liberal Arts from Long Beach City College, I married my high school sweetheart DR. Yvette Maythorn-Harps which who graduated also with PD in education from Pepperdine University. We currently we have three children. Both our two daughters and one son have completed their college master’s degrees and they have outstanding careers and they all have nonprofit organizations that emphasis helping those in need. Currently, I have three grandchildren one boy and two girls. My oldest granddaughter currently is at Harvard University studying to be a doctor.
Most importantly, I have a strong both a strong faith base past and present. I was ordained at my church in 1990 to be a Baptist Deacon but I have been a member of my church located in south central Los Angeles CA since 1962. Currently, I have continued to serve my church in this position. I loved to travel. While I was in the military and during my retirement, I have been all over the world and was able to travel both foreign and domestic and was able to learn and speak three different languages (Japanese, Chinese,-Mandarin, and Philippines/Filipino-Tagalog). My favorite holiday is Christmas and my favorite hobby since 1974 is a being a music DJ for parties for special events for all genres of music. And of course, Old-School 70's and Motown are my favorite.
